OK, you’re sitting there thinking about using social media because you think you should – whether it’s twitter, facebook, linkedin, whatever, but you’re also thinking that I’m just the local plumber or I’m the local dry cleaner or electrician or massage therapist and really how am I going to use it? One of the best ways is become the local SME (subject matter expert) in whatever your field is.
If you’re the dry cleaner – everyone is trying to figure out how to get that particular stain out of their favorite blouse – you can tell them. Become the person everyone can go to find out how to clean everything. People will come to you because you now have built up a relationship with them and they trust you.
If you are the local plumber or electrician – again, become the SME. A couple of years ago I had a small leak in my bathroom and it was early evening. I called a plumber who walked me through how to fix the leak and it worked! The next time I needed a plumber, guess who I called. Offer some basic tips and answer fix-it problems, remind people when to do seasonal things around the house. Make yourself valuable.
If you are a massage therapist – again offer tips – how to stretch properly or relieve a cramp. You can also tweet when you have an opening in your schedule and offer a discount to the first person who tweets you back.
Social media is a valuable tool for you no matter what size your business is. Use your imagination and start thinking of all the ways you can use it.
